brass revival

There was a period in the not-so-distant past when brass accents were thrown out or painted over. It was as if homeowners desperately wanted to erase any sign that the faux-gold trend ever existed. New, high-quality brass has contemporary tones and finishes. But vintage brass decor pieces (think vases, lamps, and figurines) are being fervently revived.

Brass can be showstopping when it’s in top shape, but it tarnishes quickly. If you are not a fan of the natural patina, you can bring brass back to life with some simple cleaning techniques. Ensure that the item is uncoated and determine whether it’s solid or plated brass. You’ll need to be careful not to rub the finish off brass-plated items. (If it’s brass plated, a magnet will stick to it.) Then, you can simply use warm soapy water; a DIY concoction of lemon juice, water, and baking soda; or turn to a cleaner like liquid Bar Keepers Friend to get the job done. Use a soft cotton rag to rub away the tarnish in a jiff. Written by Maresa Giovannini.
